There’s a saying that most people figuratively die very young, only to be buried when they are old. This communicates the fact that they have lost hope. They have given up on life and leave at the mercy of chance. It is sad when you don’t have hope because you lend your life to circumstances and to the wishes of other people. You wake up to nothing, anything that comes your way will occupy you for that moment.
Sad living indeed!
Instead, when you have hope, it keeps you going and gives you something to look forward to. One person said that hope stands for “hold on, pain ends”. Having hope is a start, it makes you see light at the end of the tunnel. You can hope to have a bank balance worth millions. You can hope to wake up to a paid-up house, you can hope to start a business and pursue your passion, the list goes on.
The challenge is that most people fail to go beyond hope because they believe that hope is a strategy. It is not because hope without a plan is wishful thinking. You can hope until you are blue in your face, however, until you have a solid strategy and plan, that bank account will remain dry, the house will remain unpaid, that business will reside in your head.
A device from which you are reading this article started as thought just like many other things. Your thoughts, ideas and hopes will never manifest into physical reality until acted upon. In the words of Brian Tracy, “it is not what you say, or wish or hope or intend, it is only what you do that counts”.
You can move from hope to a plan in simple steps:
Clarity: You cannot act on what you don’t know. Start by defining your goals because clarity is king. Define your milestones as this will remove the haziness so that you can see the road ahead. Write your goals down and hold yourself accountable.
Make a move: Initiate that first step, a journey of a thousand miles starts with just one step. We think too much about the process and not the outcome we are looking for. That first step will bring small and quick wins. It takes one step at a time to build more self-belief and confidence while moving towards the future you deserve.
Step up: You are not here to play small, go big or go home, so goes the saying. Turn that crawl into a walk, a walk into a run and a run into a soar. Until you decide to soar, you will continue to be a turkey instead of soaring with the eagles.
Remember that hope is a good start but not the end. Hope without action is wishful thinking. It might help you to ponder on the words of Vance Havner when he said, “the vision must be followed by the venture. It is not enough to stare up the steps – we must step up the stairs”.
