Life is about decisions, period. These are the words of my former mentor whenever we discussed making it in life. I have taken these words to heart every step of my life. I learned early that we become the product of our decisions. I always wondered where could I have been had I not taken a conscious decision to pursue my studies. I can only imagine how my life could have turned had I stuck to my home town and not decided to move to other places to challenge life head on. I can only wonder how my life could have been if I had not changed careers. The list of decisions I took is endless.
I know many people who know what they want in life, but remain unsettled, conflicted and on the borderline when it comes to decision making. If you do not take decisions, your life will be the same come 2018 and subsequent years.
Stephen Covey was on point, “I am not a product of my circumstances. I am a product of my decisions”. This is true for both decisions you make and the ones you fail to make. Remember, not making a decision is a big decision.
Indecisiveness has fatal consequences, and should be avoided at all costs:
1. Indecisiveness holds you back
Imagine the things that you wanted to do some 3 years back and you still have not done. If you had done them, how far could your life have progressed? Indecision is the enemy of progress and breeds failure.
2. Indecisiveness impacts others
Others argue that being indecisive is their decision. If you take such a view to life, be cognisant of the impact that your indecisiveness has on others. If you are indecisive about your life goals, in most cases you expect others to save you. You become a burden, expecting to be carried across all facets of your life.
3. Indecisiveness ruins your life
Many people suffer from what is called a squirrel syndrome, the inability to decide. By failing to make critical decisions about your life, you are relegating yourself to the dustbin of history. We will know you as a ‘has been”. How many people do you know of who did not complete their chosen fields of study, not because of lack of money but because of indecisiveness? The only evidence that they have at least studied is the big terminology they throw around but unfortunately, going nowhere. The world is awash with many people who had it all and today have nothing not only because of poor decisions but lack of decisiveness. Because of this, great talents have gone to ruin and are summarised by this quote from an unknown source, “be decisive, right or wrong, make a decision. The road of life is paved with flat squirrels who couldn’t make a decision”. You don’t want to be a statistic, lying dead on the road of unfulfilled goals.
Yes, it’s important to set goals for 2018 however, to set your goals requires decisiveness. It takes action to achieve your goals however, it takes decisiveness to act.
